The main benefit of cycling is increased cardiovascular fitness. I say this with a resounding "Yay!" Surprisingly, some fitness enthusiasts do not find this benefit to be a sexy gain. Instead, words like increased strength and creatine phosphate system seem to be more seductive to your average gym goer. Many group fitness programs tend to focus on power, watts, and strength. This is great, but too often the pounding heart and it's regulatory systems are neglected and tossed aside like an old, used sweaty headband. As a program director at Studiomix, I seized the opportunity to implement technology that would excite and educate our members about training their hearts. I searched high and low for a group fitness system that was non-proprietary, easy to use, educational, and fun. OnBeat was the just the system that our club needed to launch us into 2017.
I was excited to find technology that was nonproprietary and versatile. My role has made me responsible for some great purchases in the gym setting, but I have also purchased some lemons. I have been guilty of procuring obsolete equipment that eventually grew dust and sat lazily in a dark, cobwebbed corner. I needed a system that could easily translate from cycling to HIIT classes, be mobile, and relevant in the years to come. Members can bring in their own monitors from home and they sync easily (Most ANT + and Bluetooth compatible heart rate monitors work well. Sadly Apple watch and Fitbit do not work, yet. That will hopefully change soon). I also found that OnBeat played well with our MindBody check-in system making it one of the most versatile and compatible group fitness applications I had tested to date.
Point- click -go. The OnBeat app is easy for coaches to use and doesn't take away from the cycling experience. Instructors move fast and think fast. Knowing that my fellow fitness professionals tend always be on the move, I could not give them a tool that would require a ten-page manual to use. I was excited to find that this system also transferred well between studios, small group training classes, and the functional training floor. Staff and members alike have been excited to see the added value to our membership packages.
Easy to read, color-coded bio-metrics are a great way to educate without talking over someone's head. Participants generally have an "Ah-ha" moment the first time they are able to experience their BPM (Beats Per Minute) and heart rate training zones in real time. They immediately start asking questions creating an investigative, hands-on class environment. Students are connecting the dots in regards to overall performance and fitness goals. Basically, we are finding that participants are genuinely more invested in their training hour.
OnBeat saunters to the fitness and technology table and serves up a delicious plate of easy to digest app goodness for the boutique studio setting. Our fitness enthusiasts love OnBeat!
